    Kakuru’s Story

Both of Kakuru’s parents died before he had turned a year old. His elderly grandfather took both Kakuru and his twin brother Kato in when they were just babies.  Their grandfather had been a farmer and at one time was able to provide food and basic necessities for the boys, but in his old age, his health began failing. He was unable to work and Kakuru and Kato regularly went days without food. Attending school had not been a possibility for them as their entire focus was on basic survival.  The twins and the grandfather begged on the streets for money  but it was often not enough to meet even their most basic essential needs. In July of 2017, Kakuru developed an infestation of jiggers in his feet (because he could not afford shoes).  At around the same time, his brother Kato sustained an injury and developed a wound on his leg which became infected.  It became so painful that he was no longer able to walk the streets to beg for food.

Their grandfather pleaded with the Peace for Paul Foundation to rescue the boys and to give them a chance at a bright future. In 2017, both Kato and Kakuru were welcomed home to the safety and stability of The Peace for Paul family. Kato now attends a highly ranked boarding school and is working hard, studying to one day become a doctor. When not studying, he enjoys playing football and swimming.

In 2019, the PFP social work team located an aunt of the boys (the sister to Kato and Kakuru’s late mother). She is a teacher in the town neighboring the PFP family home and she has welcomed the boys to spend school holidays with her so she may get to know them and show the boys the love they deserve to have. PFP continues to support Katkuru with education and all expenses of living, and during school holidays he and Kato spend time with their aunt in her home.
